Artist Showcase: Paper Kindness
At Inkwell’s Artist showcase, we highlight our greeting card artists. Today we’re featuring Paper Kindness by Kristin Matte.
When did you realize that you are an artist?
I don’t think of myself as an artist. Just someone who is generally creative and who uses different avenues to express myself. I still work a day job to support myself, illustration and graphic design are just another part of my life.
What inspires you and your art?
Lived experiences. Hard times. How challenging and difficult life can be. A lot of my work deals with mental health and has either a supportive, sweet tone or a sardonic, existential view.
How does art impact your life?
Art is how we interpret and process life. Without it we would all be so limited and flat. Art helps us recognize each other in shared experiences and opens us up to empathy and to parts of ourselves we can’t always describe or access.
What advice do you have for younger artists who are just starting?
Don’t be impressed by the fancy tools and expensive design things. You don’t need them. It might take time for you to figure out what works for you, but you already have everything you need. Read as much as you can, go to shows, explore - don’t let yourself be intimidated by manicured portfolios and really expensive design software. There are always hacks. There are helpful communities. There are classes. Take some time and find your spot.
